Giveaway and Review: “Not Just Spirited”

We have a winner: Sarah!  Congratulations!  Your copy will be sent via USPS as soon as I get your information!

Thank you to all the contestants.

Not Just Spirited: A Mom’s Sensational Journey With Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)” is the book by Chynna T. Laird, who just guest blogged for me last week.  It chronicles her struggles to raise a child with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), many of which I dealt with myself.

What I like about the book is its honesty.  Ms. Laird does not hold back from telling the reader her feelings in dealing with the various care providers, care centers, and schools she has enrolled Jaime in.  It’s spot on in relaying all the difficulty a parent has when trying to get just the right services to help their child become a healthy, functioning member of society, and how much frustration you experience when your child’s needs are not understood. It’s also a quick and easy read.  I highly recommend this book for parents newly dealing with SPD, but also for parents without special needs children, who want to gain insight on what the life of a special needs parent is like.

Hi there, I am writing because a friend sent me this link after hearing about the difficulties I’ve had with my infant son. We strongly suspect SPD and he will have his first evaluation this Friday. I already have one special needs child–an 8 year old girl who was born with a heart defect and received a heart transplant 3 years ago. Balancing her needs with the needs of my son has been extremely challenging. My husband and I are drained, mentally and physically, and running on every little bit of resilience and strength that we have. We are weary of comments and advice from all the people we know who just don’t get it. We are desperate to find someone who understands our particular struggles and challenges.

I would definitely be interested in reading this book. My son has sensory processing issues, ADHD, OCD and Tourette’s Syndrome. So many challenges, so little understanding. It can be very tough to try to find people who understand or even people willing to listen. I’m a single and only parent to this child and to say it’s tough, on some days can be an understatement. Thankfully, we have our good days too. Sounds like a fabulous book.

Last year my son’s teacher told me that she suspected my son could have SPD as there were certain things he did in her class that made her think this so I’d like to learn as much as I can about this and maybe find a way to help my son as he is in 4th grade now and as the years progress he will be moving at a faster and faster pace and I want him to be able to keep up.

My son has just been evaluated and officially diagnosed. We’re very much in the dark and are trying to catch up and understand what we need to do to help him succeed.

I just saw this giveaway. My son is 5 years old and was diagnosed with severe hypo SPD when he was just over 2 years old. He has been receiving OT since his diagnosis. He will be undergoing another extensive evaluation in another week, possibly adding PDD to his list of labels. He also has a heart condition and *my* heart breaks for him when I watch how much more difficult life is for him. I feel alone as I parent him. Parenting his typical 3 yo brother is much easier. I also have a 6 mo old DD and she acts much like my oldest son. In many ways I am scared. How will I handle two childre with SPD? Yet I know I will..
