I recently received a copy of “Social Media Engagement for Dummies” by Aliza Sherman and Danielle Elliott Smith to review.
It’s possible that I’m far too advanced for this book, but I struggled with the first two sections. I found the writing bland, which is surprising considering the authors. The first two sections are really for people still trying to make the decision about social media, who know pretty much very little about professional engagement. There’s a bit of redundancy about being cautious online as well. But wait – there is more to this review!
I got to Section III, things really picked up. The authors change tone a bit to make it more engaging and share their own experiences rather than the generic or big brand examples in the first section. There are really some useful tools here and while the book is positioned for business owners, a blogger can mine a ton of useful marketing and engagement tips in this part of the book such as integrating tools like Facebook and Pinterest, tips for making the most of video and standing out on YouTube. There’s even a chapter on leveraging location-based services, something I had not considered before that I’ll now be investigating more heavily. A great section is the 10 case studies in the “Part of Tens” that is set up in a clear and organized manner. Each brand is studied with tips, pitfalls to avoid and gauging results.
Overall, the book has great tips but unless you are completely brand new at social media, you’ll need to skip through some of the chapters. Now that said, I’m sure users who have not been on social media that long will benefit from those sections, in terms of things you might now know, such as best times to engage online. I’m definitely recommending this book for newbies and businesses that do not yet have a social media plan.
